Day 3_”Anyway, I’m happy”

 N. arriva da Idlib in Siria, ha 27 anni e da 16 mesi è fermo sull’isola, sulla quale è sbarcato nel maggio del 2016.
Fino ad oggi gli sono stati negati i documenti. Appena venuto a conoscenza del secondo rifiuto per evitare l’arresto e la deportazione in Turchia ha vissuto 7 mesi nascosto, grazie all’aiuto da alcuni abitanti dell’isola.
A maggio di quest’anno ha ricevuto la notizia della sospensione dell’ordine di espatrio e ha avviato le pratiche per il terzo appello. La risposta potrebbe arrivare da un momento all’altro, domani come tra un anno. Nel frattempo, appena uscito dai sette mesi di “clandestinità”, ha solo una certezza: vuole lavorare. Dopo di dieci anni di cameriere in Siria sarebbe disposto a fare di tutto pur di non continuare questa professione. Il suo sogno sarebbe quello di poter lavorare come traduttore per qualche associazione presente sull’isola. Ma il destino è stato ironico. Parlando con alcuni amici gli è stato offerto proprio un lavoro da cameriere, che ha accettato immediatamente. Adesso lavora da mesi e si può permettere l’affitto di una stanza vicino al mare. Il lavoro ha ridato un senso alla sua quotidianità, e anche se i suoi problemi non sono ancora finiti, ci saluta dicendo “Anyway, I’m happy”.

N. is from Idlib in Syria and he is 27. He has arrived in Samos 16 months ago, may 2016. 

He has lived hidden for 7 months thanks to the help of some local people. This May he has received the notification of the suspension of the order of expatriation.

After seven months living illegally the only thing he wants now is to find a job. His dream is to work as translator for the associations working on the island, but one day one of his friends propose him a job as waiter which he accepted immediately. 

Now thanks to his new job he is able to rent a small room close to the sea side. 
This job has been the opportunity to has his routine back, and even if his problems are still there he told us “Anyway, I’m happy!”.

Ognuno dei fotografi a lavoro sull’isola svilupperà, contestualmente alle attività laboratoriali quotidiane, un proprio personale progetto. Da oggi, all’interno della sezione richerche in corso, saranno presenti alcune delle fotografie inserite all’interno della ricerca artistica che i quattro porteranno avanti “ai lati”.

Inauguriamo la sezione con quest’immagine di Andrea Luporini, scattata ieri a Vathi, che il fotografo ha deciso di inserire all’interno di un progetto nato in Italia diversi mesi fa, One less.

The four photographers working on our projects in Samos will develop beside the workshops a person project. 

Part of this personal projects will be accessible in the section richerche in corso, 

The opening images have been taken by Andrea Luporini in Vathi. The photographer has decided to include this images to the project One less, started in Italy some months ago.

ΕΊΜΑΣΤΕ/NOI SIAMO

Con il titolo ΕΊΜΑΣΤΕ/NOI SIAMO verranno indicate, d’ora in avanti, tutte le foto scattate dai migranti incontrati sull’isola di Samos: ritratti di famiglia, testimonianze del loro viaggio, ritratti e autoritratti. Verranno pubblicate anche le fotografie che alcuni di loro produrranno come esito del lavoro laboratoriale svolto con i quattro fotografi al lavoro in questi giorni.

Le fotografie saranno prive di commento o contestualizzazione; verrà indicato l’autore (quando possibile, nome e cognome) e il titolo che hanno deciso di dare alle loro immagini.

Tutti le immagini saranno poi raccolte insieme, e potranno essere visibili cliccando sull’argomento Είμαστε/Noi siamo.

ΕΊΜΑΣΤΕ/NOI SIAMO it’s the title of the section where will be possible to find all the photos took by the migrants: family portraits, etc…
You’ll also find the photos took by them during the workshops they did with the four photographers. 

The photos will be without caption; you will just find the name of the author when possible, and the title they have given to their images.

Immagini scattate nei dintorni dell’hotspot di Vathi, testimonianza di incontri con persone non identificate nel loro continuo movimento fra il campo e il paese. Distopia e utopia sono luoghi reali a Samos, divisi da pochi passi: uno spazio vuoto, che ha nel transitare la sua unica funzione.

Tutte le fotografie appartenenti a questa serie saranno riunite all’interno della sezione A pochi passi.

This series of images have been taken close to the hotspot in Vathi.
This project it’s the testimony of  anonymous people wondering between the hotspot and the city center. Distopia and utopia are real here in Samos.

Day 3_”voglio solo sapere come funziona questa macchina”

“Non m’importa di nulla, del resto, della realtà. Non voglio pensare a tutto quello che sta succedendo, non ne ho voglia. Voglio solo sapere come funziona questa macchina”

“I don’t care about reality. I don’t wan’t think about what’s going on. I just want to know how this camera works.”

“Perché mi interessa? Se riuscissi a fotografare davvero bene, magari potrei far sentire le persone come mi sento io, all’interno del campo”

“Why I’m interested? if I can take good photos, maybe I can make people feel the same feeling I feel living inside the hotspot.”

“Ok, ok. Ho capito. Mi insegni a fare le stesse fotografie col mio telefono?”

“Ok, ok. I got it. Can you teach me how to make the same photos with my telephone?”.

Istantanee da Macrochorafo

Istantanee

Macrochorafo è una casa, a qualche chilometro di distanza dal centro di Vathy, dove vivono quattro famiglie che sono arrivate a Samos circa sette settimane fa. Non riuscendo a raggiungere a piedi il centro del paese, dove si svolgono le attività, alcuni tra i volontari  hanno deciso di recarsi ogni mattina a trovare chi vi risiede per intrattenere i bambini e lasciare agli adulti qualche momento di decompressione. In tutto a Macro ci sono più di 10 bambini di età inferiore ai sei anni.

Oggi abbiamo accompagnato i volontari e lasciato a ogni famiglia un ritratto.

Day 2_ Istantanee

Macrochorafo it’s a country house not so far from Vathy. In this house there are four families of refugees arrived in Samos seven weeks ago.

For the migrants living there it’s very difficult to reach Vathy city center, where there are all the activities, for this reason some of the volunteers started to go to Macrochorafo every morning in order to entertain the children and give the possibility to the adults to have some rest.

Today we went to Macro with the volunteers and we have left a portrait to every family.

Istantanee da Macrochorafo

Questo progetto nasce a Macrochorafo, un’abitazione che ospita alcune famiglie di migranti con bambini. Partito da questo luogo, è arrivato a toccarne altri, tutti legati dalla necessità di ricreare un tessuto visivo immediato e tangibile, interrotto o cancellato dallo strappo con il proprio paese e l’abbandono della propria casa. La perdita delle fotografie del passato e la difficoltà di produrne di nuove fanno di queste istantanee un dono, un oggetto prezioso capace di dare forma, attraverso l’immagini, a legami e affetti.

 

Tutto il materiale relativo a questo progetto è riunito nella sezione Istantanee da Macrochorafo.

This project take place in Macrochorafo: it’s a country house where some of the refugees live with their children.
The loss of photographies of their past and the difficulties to take new photos, makes this snapshots a gift, a precious object, an image representing their emotional ties.

Raccontare una storia, qualche volta, non è facile. Specie se ci si trova all’interno di una stanza con persone che parlano lingue diverse e hanno davanti estranei.
Le parole risultano, in questi casi, molto meno potenti di quel che si possa pensare: si svuotano e fanno eco, sembrano allontanarsi dalla realtà, appartenere a un universo lontano.

Le immagini, invece, possono aiutare. Fanno parte della vita di tutti noi e riescono a racchiudere molto più di un solo significato. Sono stratificate, dense, complesse. Ma universali.

Abdel Ali Missaoui e Mohammed “Steve” hanno raccontato le loro storie attraverso immagini che hanno scelto (guarda i due video cliccando QUI e QUI), che non hanno scattato e che non avevano probabilmente mai visto prima. Nonostante questo, ogni immagine scelta e mostrata aveva qualche cosa di personale, come se, in parte, appartenesse alla loro vita.

Abdel Ali Missoui and Mohammed “Steve” told us their stories through images they have never seen before (have a look at the videos QUI e QUI ). Every image they chose even if it’s something new for them it’s still something meaningful for them, something about their lives.
